Is a Super Volcano a fearful threat for the destruction of the earth and humanity?

A volcano is a rupture or an opening in the surface of the earth that allows the ashes of the volcanoes, magma and other gaseous element to get away from the innermost surface or below it. Whenever there are tectonic plates which converge or diverge, volcanoes are also present. Volcanic eruption starts when the magma rises due to magma chamber that causes magma to move up in conduit and goes out on its vents. The type of volcanic eruption depends on the obstacles that influence it. Classification of volcanic activity affects how often the eruption occurs. Volcanoes which are active often erupts while dormant volcanoes are asleep which in due time will erupt and are very dangerous too, actually it’s more dangerous because sometimes the eruption is unpredictable. Volcanoes are very powerful which is why you need to know about earthquakes as it can also trigger the temblor especially the super volcano.

Krakatoa is a volcano located in the Sunda Strait (between the island of Java and Sumatra) indonesia. The volcano is very famous in the world because of the eruptions in 1883 referred to as one of the most devastating volcanic eruption of all time.

Historical examples of eruptions of volcanoes are Krakatoa, Mt. Vesuvius and the recent eruption of Mount St. Helens but these are meager amount compared to the shocking facts of the first four months of earthquake struck and a super volcano eruption. The super volcano eruption is powerful ejecta which is more than 240 cubic miles which is thousands times bigger than any volcanic eruption in history. The super volcanoes may happen to erupt when the magma rises from the hotspot going to the crust. The pressure becomes greater until it forms a magma pool, then it will erupt when the crust can no longer hold the pressure. Super volcanoes may form from the convergent plate boundaries like the Toba and the hotspot found in the continent like the Yellowstone.

The six identified super volcanoes are Long Valley, Valles Caldera and Yellowstone, in US; North Sumatra, Lake Toba in Indonesia; North Island Taupo Volcano in New Zealand and the Kyūshū, Japan’s Aira Caldera in Kagoshima Prefecture also remind us of the sixth deadliest earthquake in history. The typical eruption of any of these super volcanoes can create a huge devastation while covering the place with volcanic ashes and lava as well as making great and long change in the weather just like the shortened ice age. Also, the super volcanic activity can threat the species extinction.

At present, these are not active in nature as they stay dormant. This is a great advantage for the people living near or in the locations of these active volcanoes but it creates a fear on the hearts and minds of the people for they know the great devastation is somewhat unpredictable. The powerful eruption when happen can easily die down the released energy of the biggest part of western nation’s nuclear weapon arsenal. Like the Krakatoa eruption, it can greatly drop the Earth’s temperature. One least event which was a proof of this was when after the Krakatoa eruption ending creating a whole year with no summer, the main cause of the Northern Hemisphere’s famine. People further fear for the super volcanic activity of the Yellowstone Caldera in 2012 prediction.

A great significance of the last time’s supervolcanic eruption was in Toba, Sumatra that was about 71, 000 years way back. It resulted to the blotted rays of the sun and nearly close to the human beings extinction which luckily there are still 5, 00 people became the survivors who propagate the human race after such a great destruction on earth.

The sixth deadliest Earthquake in History

Earthquake gives us many reasons to ponder in our life and activities. Why you need to know about earthquakes? This natural disaster happens to those countries which said to be under the Ring of Fire Pacific belt. If it happens to a certain place, many become alarmed and concerned on the situation there. It calls for the unity of all nations especially if great earthquake will hit a specific place like the earthquake happened to Japan last March 2011.

It is important that aside from unity people in world must keep being aware and well informed about the disaster created by earth quake. The basic idea that they must know the news and other key data about an earthquake, when and how earth quake susceptible countries  affect the lives of the people affected by such temblor. Tracing the history and current earthquake information can lead to the clarity and great preparation for another upcoming earth quake which can be possible to happen again.

The earthquakes in 2010 have sadly resulted to 10 mortalities.  One of these temblor is the Haiti earthquake according to the Haitian government figures has an estimated 316, 000 deaths. The shocking facts of the first four months of earthquake struck, is one among the 6th deadliest earthquake recorded history. The devastation of magnitude 7.0 changed catastrophically the lives of many Haiti especially for those who are within the town of Leogâne where it was found to be the epicenter of the quake.  This is estimated with 16 miles at the west of Port-au-Prince which is the capital of Haiti. The earth quake surprised many Haiti at 21:53 UTC or 16:53 local time on January 12, 2010 of Tuesday. It takes another 12 days and on January of twenty fourth, there are 52 aftershocks measured with 4.5 or greater. It is about three million people were then affected and the government of Haiti reported that 300,000 had been injured and  1, 000, 000 people become homeless. However, the United States Agency for International Development together with other international agencies noted an estimation of death toll between 46, 000 to 92, 000  with 220, 000 injured and around 1.5 million to 1.8 million is homeless. However, Haiti’s government gave an approximate 30, 000 commercial buildings collapsed and 25, 000 residences were damaged or destroyed.

Some places which received major damage are Jacmel, Port-au-Prince and other parts of settlements region.  Significant landmark structures were notably damaged and this includes the Port-au- Price Cathedral, Presidential Palace and National Assembly building.

Many private and civic organizations give their assistance along with various countries who extend their humanitarian ai, funds, foods, clothing and other basic necessities. Despite of the great help from many people around the world, it was a difficult scenario for the Haiti government during the rescue operation because of sea and land facilities, electrical connections and communication systems were damaged by the earthquake. Behind the crisis faced by the Government of Haiti and its people, they warmly thank those people on the entire nations who gave their unfailing support through relief goods, water and medical care saving many survivors of Haiti catastrophic earthquake.

Why you need to know about earthquakes?

One of the major natural disasters that hit today’s world is earthquake. Most of earthquake incidents greatly affect the life, livelihood and properties of the people. Thus, each must be informed, educated and took the latest updates about earthquakes in order to be well prepared in such kind of disaster. High magnitude of earthquake is one of the most catastrophic events that can exist to any part of this world especially for countries which belongs to the Pacific Ring of Fire. These temblors usually occur due to the movement of tectonic plates that collides the tectonic plate boundaries of each other found in the upper layer of the earth or can be caused by the great explosion during volcanic eruptions both in land and in water areas which can cause the death of thousands of people that were compounded due to the collapsed buildings, mud slides, flash floods, tsunamis and fires.

Earth quake hazards can start on ground shaking which can make things fall and topple it all over the place. Then, it will be followed by the ground rupture that makes some land displacement or separation of ground soil. The observance of massive bank scouring and liquefaction can be seen. At this point it can trigger or cause tsunami in the sea or landslides in some land areas. The tectonic movement in the sea or underwater volcanic eruption which caused a certain earthquake of at least 5.7 magnitudes can create a tsunami in bodies of water.Magnitudes of earthquake range from 2. 5 or less up to 8 magnitudes or greater. It has been estimated that 900, 000 earthquake incidents are occurring annually with 2.5 or less magnitude. It is usually recorded in a seismograph but is not always felt by the people. If a magnitude of 2.5 to 5.4 earthquake strikes, it is usually felt yet there are no causes of minor damages. This kind of earthquake magnitudes happen 30, 000 in number as reported on each year. On the other hand, 5.5 to 6.0 magnitudes which happens in 500 incidents every year, there is only a minimal damage in houses, buildings and any other structure. However, 6.1 to 6.9 magnitudes estimated to be 100 in number each year causes many damages in most crowded areas. Serious damages and a very known great earthquake exist from 7.0 to 8 or greater magnitudes which happens 20 times annually.

This fact is supported by many past earthquakes that stroke many countries around the world just like the great Sumatran Earthquake and Indian tsunami that hit 12 countries in Asia last December 26, 2004. It resulted to 226, 707 casualties and 146, 004 missing plus great damages among houses and many other properties of the affected areas which made 2, 475, 375 displaced and massive destruction of property. Then, the recent Japan’s earthquake which resulted to tsunami last March 11, 2011 was confirmed with 10, 102 dead, 17, 053 missing and 2, 777 injured persons.

Now, the existence of earthquake must be the concerned of everyone like nations being united to build a great movement against the disastrous earthquake impact in every country. You can be the instrument to prevent great quake disaster by being involved on the risk reduction management and disaster preparedness.
